The Yangtze river waters reveal Buddhist statue
is a rare phenomenon detected by the wrath of Mother Nature, leading to this medieval discovery that has captured social media by storm.Three Buddhist statues were revealed in China’s Yangtze River as water levels dropped to record lows, due to drought and heat waves. The statues, believed to be approx 600 years old, are atop the once-submerged island reef called Foyeliang, near the city of Chongqing. pic.twitter.com/niuwo2tlza

State Medium Xinhua reported that the three statues placed on the elevated point of the island reef were identified to be built during the Ming and Qing dynasties that ruled China from 1368 to 1644. A local visiting the medieval site often believes that the statues would disappear under water once the river’s water levels return to normal. The locals also believe that these statues represent the cultural properties left by their ancestors. Although these statues are a sight to behold, the receding water levels of the Yangtze River are a matter of deep concern for the region.
As per official forecasts, the region has received an all-time low of 45% less rainfall since July this year. Moreover, the high temperatures will likely be extended further into September, making it tougher for the locals and the hydropower station. The drought has seen 66 rivers across 34 countries in Chongqing city dry up, as per the state broadcaster CCTV’s press release on August 19. The third longest river worldwide, Yangtze, is facing a severe drought this season with the heatwave that has also led to a nationwide drought alert with temperatures exceeding 40oC or 104oF in many cities within the region.
Forecasters have also warned that the sweltering conditions would follow its trend in the coming month amid fears of a dicey situation in the Sichuan province over the water loss that powers the hydropower system in the region. The local authorities have been working hard to maintain power and find fresh water for irrigation ahead of the autumn harvest within the next quarter.
