No wonder the people call this place the ‘Symphony of Stones’. The uniqueness of Garni Gorge has also drawn attention historically, that’s why an ancient temple and a monastery, which also has a UNESCO World Heritage Site title, exist here. Garni Gorge is an easy place to get to by road. You can even get to the village of the same name and simply walk up a cobblestone path. Garni Gorge is a natural wonder that will make you realize that Mother Nature is an artist.

Shaki Waterfall

How many of you can claim to have seen a natural attraction that gets turned off during the tourist off-season? Only those who have seen Shak Waterfall can. The gorgeous and roaring Shaki Waterfall is one of the most picturesque waterfalls you will see. Flowing down on lava flows, this waterfall dazzles white owing to the force of the flow. A hydropower plant nearby took all the water that made the waterfall what it is, almost putting an end to it. But thanks to people protesting it, the water now flows with full force during the tourist season during visiting hours and is turned off only after hours or during tourist off-season.

The highest peak in Armenia has interesting geography. It stands at a height of 13,420 feet (4080 meters). On the west is the Akhurian River, on the east is the Kasagh River, and on the northern side is the Shirak Plain, making this whole region a geographically blessed place. On top of the mountain, you get sweeping views of the whole country, and at the bottom, there’s rock art. Both these attract many tourists all year round.

To honor him, the 39 Alphabet monument was built near his grave and stands today as a reminder of his great work. This is a wonderful site loved by locals and tourists and an absolute must-see.

Khachkars – Noratus Cemetery

Almost everywhere around the world, there are tombstones that have some written or some depictions honoring the person in the grave, but Armenians had taken it to the next level with Khachkars thousands of years ago. Their tombstones are so elaborate and intricately carved that they have gone on to become art. In the Noratus Cemetery, you’ll find the most beautiful Khachkars that look stunning. You can check out the cemetery in the daytime and admire this uniquely Armenian work of art.

Zorats Karer

Is it a remnant of an ancient city or an old astrological observatory? There’s much debate on this but one thing that cannot be debated is its importance. The Zorats Karer is Armenia’s version of the Stonehenge. 223 stones arranged in a circular shape with holes bored in them stand at this mysterious place. Some say the holes are observing the night sky while others think a massive structure stood here. You should come and explore the mystery for yourself.

This is one of the most fascinating experiences of all the Armenian things to do. This Ani Overlook is a place that lets you see Ani, the former capital, which was turned into ruins because of wars and earthquakes. With its glory all gone, all the people migrated leaving behind remnants of a once thriving mega city. This lies on the Turkish border that is still controlled by Russian soldiers, so you have to get special permission and you are escorted by soldiers to the best viewing spots. It is quite a thrill and a little bit dangerous to be on the border escorted by soldiers.

Wings of Tatev

Fly to Tatev Monastery, literally, atop the Wings of Tatev Cable Car. This world record holder is the longest non-stop cable car ride in the world. This smooth and fast 3.5-mile (5.6 km) ride takes you over the Vorotan River Gorge, giving you stunning views of the river and its surrounding nature. It ends at Tatev Monastery which was once one of the best centers of education. Many people love seeing this place too and the journey is an added bonus.

The Obelisk of Odzun

There are many mysterious places and objects in Armenia but none more than the Obelisk of Odzun. This obelisk is located in the village’s basilica and has, for years, been the object of discussion for many scholars. No one knows when and why it was placed there but there are theories it depicts the religious wars of the 4th century. This is a great place to see if you love the mix of history and mystery. It will intrigue your curiosity.

Crystals of Refrain

The village of Aghtsk near Yerevan plays host to these unique installations that carry stories from another world. The brainchild of artist Eames Demetrios,  Kcymaerxthaere is an installation that honors events that have happened in another universe. At this place, you will get to see and read many amazing fictional events that are being depicted in the installations as facts of the parallel universe. After a point, you might even start believing them. Crystals of Refrain will ignite your imagination.

Levon’s Divine Underground

A wife’s wish, a husband’s determination, and religious visions together have resulted in Levon’s Divine Underground. Levon Arakelyon was asked to build a potato cellar by his wife but he claimed to have received visions that asked him to keep going 23 years later, he managed to carve amazing caves under his home with simple digging and carving tools. Though Levon is no more, his wife is still there and has opened up her husband’s amazing craft for the world to see.

Travel Tips for Armenia

  • Though Armenia is safe, keep all your important documents and money safe with you. Make photocopies of all documents.
  • Stay away from border places as there are ongoing disputes and military activities. So, it’s better to stay away unless with the right guides.
  • Avoid hiring a car and driving yourself as the driving standards in the country can be erratic. It’s better to have an expert driver or public transport.
  • Public transport is excellent. From metro rails and buses to taxi cabs and ride-sharing apps, you can choose from many options.
  • If you have taken any of the Yerevan tour packages, you will be provided with convenient transport options. 

Armenian Language

There are a few common phrases that you can learn and use that will help during your trip to Armenia. Here are those phrases:

  • “Barev” means “Hello”
  • “Hajoghutyun” means “Goodbye,”
  • “Ayo” means “Yes”
  • “Voch” or “che” means “No”
  • “Inchpes eq?” means “How are you?”
  • “Shnorhakal” means “Thank you”
  • “Khndrem” means “Please”
  • “Neretseq” means “Excuse me”

Armenian Etiquette

  • Avoid wearing shorts in public, because Armenians are mostly conservative.
  • Smoking is quite common here, so don’t stop anyone from smoking.
  • Tipping is encouraged as it is a part of Armenian culture.
  • When invited by someone, bring a small gift for them or their spouse or kids.
  • If you have females with you, make sure they are never carrying anything heavy. Always offer to carry on their behalf.
  • Dinners are long affairs, so when someone invites you for dinner, expect to spend a long time eating the meal and conversing.
